I was six years old. It was afternoon and, suddenly, everyone was gathering at the coastal avenue to welcome Karamanlis. They were crying “we are free”. I didn’t know who Karamanlis was and I had no idea from whom we had been freed[1].

[1] Κonstantinos Karamanlis (1907 – 1998): founder of the right-wing party Nea Dimokratia and former Prime Minister of Greece. This person is referring to Karamanlis’ return to Greece after the fall of the military junta in 1974.
