Louise - welcome! The beauty of social media, you can join any time! Thanks so much for your thoughts and for extending the initial discussions and the link to the LA review of books! Look forward to reading that. And I know that scrunched up facial expression you speak of well!

Finally found the space to read this paper and catch up with the reading group. Thanks for the comprehensive blogs from Melissa & Vinnarasan which have really added & aided my reading of the text. Wish I'd been at both though! I have to admit unlike others at the groups I did not find it easy reading - I stopped constantly to look up words or to reread sections, my face (I imagine) is screwed up in concentration and in the spirit of vulnerability I'm happy to admit that. This brain and face work is rewarded though. Helping me think about and beyond social work and adoption - Performativity has always been helpful in this respect especially as I understand it, this notion that we are vulnerable to, and affected by, discourses that we never chose. The theorising in this paper about the nature of 'support' had resonance for my work and this quote was one I highlighted;
"The scene of vulnerability is one in which there is always a force field to which any creature is exposed, It names a set of relations between sensate beings and the force field of objects, organizations, life processes, and institutions that constitute the very possibility of livable life". So many ideas there speak to my interests in adoptive family life and its construct and support. Thanks again for the reading. I also found this recent interview with Judith Butler where she expands on the paper.

Brilliant summary of what was an engaging and insightful discussion. It was so interesting to see how people from many disciplines, researching a variety of topics, were all able to draw on and relate this article to their own experiences, academic, personal and professional. I know many of us involved in the discussion wish it could have gone on for longer!
